Twenty-Eight
Simon felt Violetâs breathing slow and knew sleep had taken her. He leaned his head down and breathed in the scent of her. Lilac, she always smelled like a field of lilac. He thought about her dream. He hadnât told her, but he had dreamed the same creature, had dreamed of the world with two moons. He thought back to the first time the creature had appeared in his dreams. It had been a few weeks prior to meeting Violet. He had awoken with sweat dripping from him, his heart racing. There werenât many things in life that frightened him, but this thing had. Somehow, he understood that it was undefeatable, he had no power to destroy it, to protect her from it. Thinking back on it, he hadnât met Violet yet, so why had that thought been in his head at the time?
Was she right? Were they two souls whoâd been together in a past life? There was certainly a connection that couldnât be explained any other way. Had she been his girlfriend, his wife, maybe even his queen? Where had that last thought come from? Queen? It didnât seem so farfetched when they were both dreaming about slimy black beasts and a world with two moons.
He pulled her close and listened to her calm breathing. Taking in the feel of her skin against his, he ran his hand over her long blonde hair. He had never gotten a chance to quietly look at her as closely or for so long. He spread his fingers through her locks; they were more a golden color mixed with long white lose curls. It was unlike any hair color heâd seen before. Of course, she was unlike any other woman. Her beauty was unmatched, and she was his. Recalling the dream with the wisps of blond hair, the green eyes he realized she had always belonged to him. Closing his eyes, he let the rhythm of her breathing lull him into a sleep that usually evaded him. Images of her face, her eyes, her hair filled his mind as he drifted off.
When he woke, he felt the absence of her body against his immediately. He looked over to the other side of the bed and saw that it was empty. A sudden rush of fear and urgency struck him, as if the empty bed was something heâd seen before, something that was to be dreaded. He shook it off, knowing she was an early riser, unlike him. They were opposite in so many ways, but those ways complemented each other. He stretched, getting up to put his pants and shoes back on. He chuckled at Violetâs reaction to him taking them off the night before. He wasnât shy about his body, he knew heâd been blessed with extremely good genes. Nor was he cocky about it. So it didnât embarrass him that sheâd been checking him out, wondering what was under his boxers. The thought of her looking at him only managed to increase his desire for her.
